Former City goalkeeper John Vaughan, who was part of the Imps’ 1997-98 promotion winning team, has sadly passed away at the age of 62.

John began his career as an apprentice with West Ham United and was a member of the Hammers team that won the FA Youth Cup in 1980-81.

He gained Football League experience during a series of loan spells before signing for Fulham in 1986.

John moved on to Cambridge United two years later and was a member of the Us team under the management of John Beck which twice reached the FA Cup quarter finals and won successive promotions to rise from the Fourth Division to the old Second Division before losing out in the play-offs for the chance of a place in the then newly formed Premier League.

John had a brief spell at Charlton before linking up again with John Beck at Preston and then following him to Lincoln. John competed with Barry Richardson for the goalkeeper’s shirt during his time at Sincil Bank making 66 League appearances for the Imps during his four seasons here.

John went on to have a lengthy career as a coach working at clubs including Huddersfield, Birmingham City and Bradford City. At the time of his passing, he was head of Academy goalkeeping at Sheffield United.
