George Peden, who has sadly passed away at the age of 83, signed for the Imps in May 1967 from Scottish club Hearts and despite arriving after the transfer deadline he was allowed to play in City’s final two matches of the season as nothing rested on them.
George established himself as first choice left back for City during his seven seasons at Sincil Bank. One of the highlights of his career was when City came from behind to defeat First Division Newcastle United in a League Cup second round tie in
September 1967. City were a goal down with less than 10 minutes left but Jim Grummett equalised before George scored the winner with an 85th minute penalty.
George will be remembered for his robust tackling and his powerful penalty kicks.
He made 250 League and Cup appearances for the Imps plus two games as substitute scoring 19 goals and was voted Supporters Player of the Year in 1972-73.
He was awarded a joint benefit match with John Kennedy in December 1973 when City played Chelsea in a match watched by over 6,500 fans.
George left Sincil Bank in the summer of 1974 and went on to play for Worksop Town, Lincoln United and Skegness Town before returning to live in Scotland.
