In October 2010, Tilson took over as manager of Lincoln City, succeeding Chris Sutton. His debut match ended in a 0–0 draw, but he quickly made an impact by signing four promising players on loan, leading to encouraging performances, including a strong away result against Wycombe. Unfortunately, on May 7, 2011, Lincoln suffered a three nil defeat at home to Aldershot, resulting in the Imp’s relegation from the Football League.
Following this setback, Tilson released or transferred nearly the entire squad, retaining only three players.
Tilson was dismissed from his role as Lincoln City manager on October 10, 2011, after a significant defeat to Tamworth.
