Switched from his customary outside right role to play as a forward, Campbell began to find the net regularly, finishing as Lincoln’s leading marksman for four successive seasons between 1934–35 and 1937–38. By the time injury forced him to retire from League football in the summer of 1939, he had scored 108 goals in just 193 first-team appearances. He then joined Midland Football League side Scunthorpe United before returning to Lincoln to feature in wartime competitions.
After hanging up his boots, Campbell completed his studies, earning a degree in chemistry and ophthalmics. He went on to become superintendent dispensing optician for the Lincolnshire Co-operative, retiring in 1975. He passed away in July 1999, aged 89.
